Review : Anna and the French Kiss, Stephanie Perkins

Who doesn’t enjoy reading some chick lit once in a while ? Well, i am but not too much or else it will turn my brain into a giant marshmallow (pause for laughing…). Anna and the French Kiss is a 2010 debut novel written by Stephanie Perkins. The book was followed with the sequels Lola and the Boy Next Door and Isla and the Happily Ever After (which i did not read and don’t plan on reading). Critical reception for Anna and the French Kiss was positive and it was qualified as an enjoyable read both by readers and critics such as Publishers Weekly and Kirkus Reviews.

Exif_JPEG_PICTUREWhat’s the story ?

Anna Oliphant, is a senior being shipped off to boarding school in Paris and she’s not so thrilled about that. She was really looking forward to spending this year in Atlanta, her hometown, with her best friend and hopefully soon-to-be boyfriend. That is until she meets the smart and charming Etienne, who has absolutely everything for him even a serious girlfriend… As the year goes by, Anna and Etienne become more close. Is this the magic the City of Lights ?

Should i read it ?

Anna and the French Kiss is one those books with a predictable plot and well… a predictable ending. Howerver, i still enjoyed it very much thanks to Stephanie Perkins’ beautiful writing. Only a few pages were turned and already i was feeling connected to all the characters, especially Anna. It wasn’t all sun shining and birds singing, no it was about real feelings, ups and downs on the journey of self-discovery in a brand new and scary city away from the comfort of home. Even if the author used a lot of clichés, she did it in a realistic and believable point of view. Since i’m french, i also appreciated the lovely scenery and now i got like this huge itch to go back to Paris one of these days. In all, it was a fun, romantic and addicting debut.
